Open Question: Firewalls used by anti-virus software?

I'm going to try NOD32, first. The firewall on the free version of AVG.killed my ability to send email. How much more protection will the firewall that comes with anti-virus software provide? How do i install the firewall that won't kill my email ability? I'm using windows xp and it is current on service packs, outlook 2002 and firefox 3.0.3. My wife uses internet explorer and i use outlook express for newsgroups. The Windows firewall is on. I have one computer that I use at home and connect to the Internet via DSL.
