Voting Question: Where can I get a customized email address without paying for internet service?

I am getting ready to dump my dial-up. Its not the company, its the bad phone lines that mess up my connection and often lock up my computer. Since I live in the sticks, I can't get cable, DSL, or anything but mega-expensive satellite. Air cards won't even work well here, and they are not cheap. For ebay and other services, I can't use a free site like Yahoo or Hotmail, so I need another address. Yahoo used to have this available, but the bundled it with a business service that I don't need or want to pay for. I would be willing to pay a small fee for a customizable email address that was at least as secure as Yahoo Mail. Any thoughts? I plan to access this email account from work during lunch or at wi-fi hot spots. Thanks for the reply.
